Why at the botanischer Garten?

This is one of the most beautiful botanic gardens in the world and only a short bus ride from the city center, here it’s possible to wander through woods and meadows, stroll in minutes from the Alps to the Caucasus observe nature at its finest.

The Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum in Steglitz is one of the largest of its kind, covering in total 43 hectares, there are over 22,000 different plant species to be found here.

Built between 1897 and 1919 according to the plans of architect Alfred Koerner under guidance of the then garden director Adolf Engler, to present the specimens returning from the German colonies, it is laid out in three areas: an arboretum containing the tree and rose collections, an exposition of world-wide plants in geologically correct formations, and a systematic section containing c. 1500 plant species.

Fifteen glasshouses are arranged in geometric formation, including the tropical house covering an area of 1700 sq.mtrs, it’s one of the largest and best examples of early 20th century glass/steel construction.

Also to be found in the gardens are numerous pieces of art and sculpture have been erected over the years.

Every season here has it’s own charm, there is always something to discover and it’s a complete contrast to the usual cityscape preferred by the street photography.

It’s the perfect place for macro-photography and the range of natural colours, shapes and forms is quite spectacular, practice honing your photography skills at a more leisurely pace.
